Air travel

13 Apr 2007

I am not a fan of air travel, there are many reasons:

  1. You are stuck in a metal tube for hours, at the mercy of the elements, technology, engineers and in flight catering
  2. Turbulence
  3. I have flown too many times and experienced too many mishaps to be comfortable sitting in a metal tube 10,000 + meters above land/sea
  4. Reading stories like this make me feel even more blissfully attached to surface transportation…

Israelis: We came close to shooting down American passenger jet

Israeli fighters buzzed an American jet this afternoon after the civilian aircraft failed to check in with the airport on its approach to Israel.

Of course, all this is TOTALLY unreasonable. Air travel is the safest form of transport and the people driving them (yes I know they pilot them) are so qualified and competent that they make a very good argument for similar requirements for all forms of transport. But its just that “metal tube” moving around in 3D space that just gets me. That and the memory of some idiot trying to open the door over the pacific…but that’s another story.

In fact, I will go further. We need sea travel back again. London to New York in 3 or 4 days by cruise liner. 🙂
