10 Perfect Gadget

Posted in Design, Gadgets, toys & websites with tags , on 2 Jul 2008 by dem1972

BoingBoing Gadgets has an excellent article all about the ten most perfect gadgets ever invented. They inlucde the wrist watch, the bicycle and printed money. I am not convinced that printed money can be defined as a gadget, but I would suggest that printed moey can be used to buy the other nine.

As an aside I also want to link to Boing Boing TV’s “A Morning at Intelligentsia Coffee Part 2″

Social Wallpapers

I like this site because it looks good…

When I was at school I was asked to write down the reasons for doing something I liked doing. So I wrote something to the point as above, I like it because it looks good. Social Wallpapering is a wallpaper sharing site that you vote for. Apply the background and vote for those you like. It is a simple, to the point site, and (as I say) it looks good. There are a few more options for sorting that I reckon they could apply, but it works.

I don’t have a category for freak weather…

Strange Winter-Tornadoes Tear Through Midwest, Kill One

A freak cluster of tornadoes raked across an unseasonably warm U.S. Midwest, demolishing houses, knocking railroad cars off their tracks, and even temporarily halting justice in one courthouse.

Record temperatures were reported across much of the country Monday, and storms continued to pummel the nation’s midsection as darkness fell. More warmth and storms were in store for Tuesday

Solar Charger

Posted in Eco, Gadgets, toys & websites on 2 Jan 2008 by dem1972

medianl.pngNot a new product, but still one that offers a simple way of charging phones anywhere. Take this along instead of the power adapters? Maybe. But the simple idea is to be able to provide charge to devices without the need to hook up to a power socket - day or night. I guess the other argument is that after initial purchase the power is ‘free’. Still its on the gadget list for this year

Global warming

I love it when science gets challenged, it all comes down to being a Fortean acolyte. But it still won’t stop me believing that a future world needs to use its resources with more thought, that politicians are a danger to the environment, that all taxis need to by hybrid, the future of travel is by rail and all cell phones should have built in solar panels

Has global warming stopped?

‘The fact is that the global temperature of 2007 is statistically the same as 2006 and every year since 2001′

Global warming stopped? Surely not. What heresy is this? Haven’t we been told that the science of global warming is settled beyond doubt and that all that’s left to the so-called sceptics is the odd errant glacier that refuses to melt?
Aren’t we told that if we don’t act now rising temperatures will render most of the surface of the Earth uninhabitable within our lifetimes? But as we digest these apocalyptic comments, read the recent IPCC’s Synthesis report that says climate change could become irreversible. Witness the drama at Bali as news emerges that something is not quite right in the global warming camp.

With only few days remaining in 2007, the indications are the global temperature for this year is the same as that for 2006 – there has been no warming over the 12 months.

BMW X6

BMW X6

With just 20 years of oil supply left (this is what I heard from a professor of energy sometime last year) we don’t have long left to drive the cars that have been helping use up all this oil. So BMW have introduced, what they call, a whole new class of car - the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) - to help use up even more of this oil. How this is different from any other off-road car is somewhat of a semantic loss on me. However, the design and styling seem to appeal, and assuming you have huge buckets of cash waiting to be spent on something, it can be yours for at least 80000 USD. Hmmm, I want a new lens for my camera before that.
